Located in the southwest of Europe, Spain is the second largest county in Europe. Mainland Spain shares borders with the countries of Portugal, Andorra and France, but also claims such famous tourist destinations as the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, and two autonomous cities in Africa that border Morocco, Ceuta and Melilla.

 

The official language of Spain is Castilian Spanish, known as castellano, which is spoken throughout the country and serves as a basis for the Spanish spoken in most of Latin America. Spain also has co-official languages, which are spoken regionally, such as Catalan, Galician and Basque. There are about 45 million inhabitants in the country and the capital of Spain, Madrid, is the largest city in the country, with a population of approximately 6 million.
